HASLET, Texas — A North Texas elementary school principal died after a "sudden" medical emergency Sunday, school district officials said this week.
Leigh Anne Romer was the principal at J.C. Thompson Elementary School in the Northwest Independent School District for 12 years. The school is located in the Sendera Ranch area of far northwest Fort Worth, near Haslet.
Northwest superintendent Mark Foust shared news of Romer's passing in a message to student families and staff on Monday.
Foust said Romer died after "a sudden medical emergency on Sunday," but more details about her death were not disclosed. Romer was married with two children.
"I speak on behalf of all Northwest ISD’s leadership team when I say Dr. Romer will forever be remembered as someone who cared about her students, teachers and community with her whole heart," Foust wrote. "Dr. Romer took pride in fostering an environment where all students knew they were going to be valued and cared for, and every day at JCT is an amazing day thanks to the culture she established in her 12 years as principal."
While students are summer break, the district is still providing access to counseling support for students and staff. Counselors will be available at the school from Tuesday through Thursday, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Foust encouraged parents to share the news about Romer's death with their child "in the manner you believe best."
"Please know how much we all love Dr. Romer and are heartbroken by her passing," Foust wrote. "Most importantly, please keep the Romer family in your thoughts and prayers."
