North Texas Municipal Water District hit by 'cybersecurity incident,' officials say

Water, wastewater, and solid waste services for customers and cities have not been affected by the incident.

WYLIE, Texas — The North Texas Municipal Water District was hit by a "cybersecurity incident," but water services have not been impacted, officials said Tuesday.

The Wylie-based district, which serves water to 13 North Texas cities mostly north and northeast of Dallas, said in a statement that the incident affected its business computer network, along with its phone system.

The district's phone system was still down Tuesday, but officials said they hoped to have it up and running again sometime this week. In the meantime, customers can call a temporary number at 469-875-9815.

Most of the district's business network has been restored, officials said. Water, wastewater, and solid waste services for customers and cities have not been affected by the incident.

The water district officials said they're working with forensic specialists who are "actively investigating the extent of any unauthorized activity."

"The investigation is ongoing at this time and includes a review of any potentially impacted District data," the district said in the statement.

The district has also let law enforcement know about the incident.

The district's member cities include: Farmersville, Forney, Garland, McKinney, Mesquite, Princeton, Plano, Rockwall, Royse City, Wylie, Richardson, Allen and Frisco.
