DALLAS, Texas — Dallas Police said a 19-year-old is facing a capital murder charge for the shooting death of 66-year-old Ahmad Alkhalaf.
According to court records, the shooting happened on Friday, Nov. 8 around 3 p.m. when the two met at a gas station in Oak Cliff in the 300 block of South Marsalis Avenue.
Court records say 19-year-old Amaya Medrano and Alkhalaf communicated through Facebook Messenger and scheduled a meet-up as Alkhalaf was attempting to sell an iPhone.
According to court documents, the two are seen talking on surveillance video. Moments later, Medrano turned to run and Alkhalaf followed behind -- that’s when Medrano turned around and shot him, court documents say.
Two Dallas ISD police officers said they heard the shooting as they were working at Felix G. Botello Elementary School.
According to police, Alkhalaf was found in the parking lot and he was taken to the hospital where he later died from his injuries.
“That should never happen to anyone,” said Daniel Cigarroa who lives in the area where the shooting happened. “If there were bullets flying around, they could've hit cars, they could've penetrated the windows, could've hit someone."
Police said investigators were able to match Medrano’s distinct tattoos on her face and neck to her social media accounts. Police discovered the same Facebook account that was used to communicate with Alkhalaf was trying to sell an iPhone 15 just three days after the deadly shooting, according to police.
Corbin Rubinson, a senior Public Information Officer with Dallas Police, said it’s important to not go to any “meet-ups” alone.
“Trust your gut if it doesn't feel right, leave,” he said.
Rubinson said the best places to meet for a transaction are the many patrol stations around the city.
“Take your phone be ready to dial 911 if you feel unsafe,”Rubinson said.
