'Wear your life jacket' | North Texas fire department's dive team warns of drownings ahead of Fourth of July

Grand Prairie's Fire and Police Departments will be on the water during the holiday weekend to make sure boaters, water skiers and swimmers are safe.

GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas — The Fourth of July weekend is one of the busiest weekends at Joe Pool Lake.

"People will be camping, playing music, barbecuing, having a good time. And it will be filled with people in the water along the bank," Battalion Chief Stephen Hromcik said.

This also means it's one of the Grand Prairie Fire Department Dive Team's busiest weekends on the water.

Hromcik worries about heat-related injuries, illegal fireworks, and drownings.

"A lot of people just jump in the water, and they don't come back up," he said.

The team says they see drownings every year. This year, three people have already drowned.

"Wear your life jacket any time you are out on the boat, especially when the boat is underway," said Hromcik.

He also encourages people to drink plenty of water and electrolytes.

"It's extremely hot. You're going to be out here having a good time on the lake so you don't notice that you're getting dehydrated too" said the battalion chief.

Hromcik reminds visitors and residents that fireworks are illegal in Grand Prairie, and are not allowed to be used on the lake.

Grand Prairie Fire and Police Department boats will be on the water to patrol and hopefully prevent any injuries or accidents. They will be prepared to respond to any calls as well.
