CORINTH, Texas — A teacher at a Corinth middle school was assaulted last week while trying to break up a fight between two students, police said.

The incident happened in a stairwell at Bettye Myers Middle School around 12:40 p.m. on Nov. 8, according to a police news release.

Two teen girls, a 13-year-old and a 14-year-old, got into a fight between classes. The teacher, a 45-year-old woman, tried to intervene and "was intentionally and knowingly assaulted by both female students," the release said.

The teacher suffered "moderate" injuries, but more information was not released by police. Investigators found cell phone videos that showed the assault.

Both teens were arrested on charges of assault on a public servant. They were taken to the Denton County Juvenile Detention Center. Their names are not being released, as they are juveniles.

"We will not tolerate students attacking teachers," Corinth Police Chief Jerry Garner said in the release.

The school, which is in the Denton Independent School District, could not share more information about the incident, citing student privacy. But the district did say, in a statement, that "fighting of any sort is not tolerated."

"We will continue to work daily with our community, including students, parents and staff, to ensure the expectations of appropriate behavior and the support of one another remains our focus," the statement said.
