Dallas City Council appoints new Mayor Pro Tem, Deputy Mayor Pro Tem

According to the city, these one-year appointments become effective on June 17.

DALLAS — The Dallas City Council appointed Councilmember Tennell Atkins as the new Mayor Pro Tem and Councilmember Adam Bazaldua as Deputy Mayor Pro Tem on Wednesday.

According to the city, these one-year appointments will take effect on June 17.

Atkins, who represents District 8, was elected back in 2017. Currently, Atkins serves as the Chair of the Economic Development Committee, Ad Hoc Committee on Pensions and Ad Hoc Committee on Administrative Affairs, according to the city.

The city says Atkins will assist in carrying out mayoral duties in their absence and continue to push the City Council's agenda.

"I am honored by the support shown by my fellow City Council members to continue in this role," Atkins stated in a press release. "Working alongside my colleagues has been a true privilege. Dallas is a great city, and it is an honor to serve our residents in this capacity."

As the Deputy Mayor Pro Tem, Bazaldua -- who represents District 7 -- will support the Mayor Pro Tem and provide assistance when both the Mayor and Mayor Pro Tem are absent, the city says.

Bazaldua currently chairs the Committee of Quality of Life, Arts and Culture.

"I am genuinely grateful to my colleagues for the opportunity to serve as Deputy Mayor Pro Tem," Bazaldua said in a press release. "I am committed to serving the needs of the City of Dallas and working with my peers to represent the interests of our community."
