This was the lone North Texas restaurant to earn a Michelin star

A sushi restaurant located in the Deep Ellum area earned the prestigious honor.

DALLAS — Several North Texas restaurants were recognized by Michelin on Monday night in Houston, but only one earned a prestigious star designation.

Tatsu Dallas, an edomae sushi restaurant in the Deep Ellum area, earned one Michelin star for "high quality cooking." No North Texas restaurants earned a two-star ("excellent cooking") or three-star designation ("exceptional cuisine").

Executive chef Tatsuya Sekiguchi is also the owner of Tatsu Dallas, which is located at 3309 Elm St. on the northeast side of Deep Ellum.

Sekiguchi grew up in Japan, where his family owned an Edomae-style sushi and sashimi restaurant in Hasuda City, Saitama, according to Tatsu's website.

Sekiguchi left home for New York City in 2001, eventually working at the Michelin-starred restaurant Sushi Yasuda in Manhattan. Sekiguchi ran Yasuda's sushi bar for 10 years before setting out on his own. After a two-year run at the Omakase Room in the West Village neighborhood of New York, Sekiguchi came to Dallas and opened Tatsu in 2022.

Here's what the Michelin Guide had to say about Tatsu:

With just 10 counter seats, the greatest challenge is securing a reservation at this sushi restaurant within the renovated Continental Gin Building – but perseverance will be rewarded because this is the genuine article. The omakase contains around 14 pieces and follows the Edomae tradition, so expect fish that gets steadily stronger in flavor as dinner progresses. You might start with Alaskan sockeye salmon, followed by Spanish tuna and delicious uni from Hokkaido and end with eel from Maine. The rice is also from Hokkaido and chef Tatsuya Sekiguchi’s deft, practiced movements ensure each piece is a perfect creation; he’ll even alter the size if you so wish. All guests are served together, so do arrive on time.

Sekiguchi's wife, Hiroko, is the okami, or chief service manager, at Tatsu Dallas. Yoji Ishii is the sous chef, and Janice Brown is the beverage director and sommelier.
