Mesquite police shooting delays classes at Poteet High School, Austin Elementary but schools not involved, officials say

Classes were delayed at Poteet High School on Monday morning.

MESQUITE, Texas — Mesquite Poteet High School and Austin Elementary were on a delayed start Monday as police responded to an officer-involved shooting in the area, police said.

Police said a man went to a Whataburger on Galloway Drive in front of Poteet High School with a knife shortly before 4 a.m. and threatened employees.

Police say they found the man next to the school in the 3300 block of Poteet Drive and he began firing a long gun.

Officers and the man exchanged gunfire before the man ran to a home on Southwynd Street and was arrested, police say.

Officials say the man was taken into custody around 8 a.m.

The suspect and officers were unharmed, police say.

Officials say there will be increased security at Poteet High School, but there's no threat.

Classes were delayed out of precaution, police said. As of 9 a.m., classes were tentatively scheduled to start at 10 a.m., Mesquite ISD said in a statement.

"We will continue to work with Mesquite Police to determine if any changes are necessary," the statement reads.

One of the officers involved has worked with the Mesquite Police Department for three years and the other is in field training, according to a news release.

The Mesquite Police Department's Criminal Investigations Unit and Internal Affairs Unit are investigating the incident. Investigators from the Dallas County District Attorney’s Office also responded to the scene, and will conduct a separate and independent investigation, according to the news release.
