MANSFIELD, Texas — Two Mansfield police officers were hit by a fleeing vehicle at a park early Friday morning, officials said.
Both officers were OK and didn't have to go to the hospital, police said.
The incident started around 1 a.m. at McClendon Park West in the 700 block of W. Broad Street, where officers found a man and woman – Diego Battle, 18, who was driving, and Breana Suarez, 18 – inside a parked Nissan Altima in the parking lot of the park and smelled marijuana, a police official said.
When officers tried to get Battle out of the car, he shifted the car into reverse, hitting two officers, and peeled out of the parking lot, the official said. One officer was caught by the driver's side door and knocked to the ground and another was swiped by the vehicle, according to police.
As he did this, Suarez hopped out of the vehicle, an official said. Police then chased the man to an apartment complex in Dallas in the 6900 block of Cockrell Hill Road, where he was taken into custody around 3:15 a.m., according to a press release.
The car was impounded, police said.
One officer was treated and released at the scene and the other officer didn't sustain any serious injuries, police said.
Battle faces charges of aggravated assault on a peace officer and evading arrest with a vehicle, and Suarez was released at the scene, according to police.
