Man faces assault charge after tackling Dallas officer, police say

When officers arrived, they found the man, identified as Roderick Green, and tried to take him into custody, police said.

DALLAS — A 32-year-old man faces a charge of assaulting a police officer after he was accused of tackling the officer during an arrest Friday night, police said.

The officer's gun went off during the scuffle, but no one was injured.

The suspect, Roderick Green, was also accused of driving away after crashing into a Dallas patio earlier Friday evening, police said.

Police said the arrest incident started shortly before 9 p.m. Friday when officers responded to multiple calls in the 4200 block of Buena Vista Street, off Fitzhugh Avenue in Dallas, about a man trying to enter homes.

When officers arrived, they found the man, identified as Green, and tried to take him into custody, police said.

Green ran across a street, and officers tried deployed their Tasers at him "but they were ineffective," a police news release said.

Green then turned toward an officer and began to chase her, according to the release.

The officer grabbed her gun from her holster as Green grabbed and tackled her to the ground, police said.

During the exchange, Green grabbed the officer's hand and weapon and the gun went off, according to the release.

A second officer then took Green into custody.

He was arrested on charges of assault on a public servant and attempting to take a peace officer's weapon.

No one was hit by the gunfire.

The officer was taken to a hospital, where she was treated and released. Green was also taken to a hospital and then booked into the Dallas County jail.

As police investigated the case, they learned that Green earlier Friday evening had crashed a sedan into a patio at Belmont and Henderson avenues, about a mile from where he was later arrested.

Police said a driver, identified as Green, was going north on Belmont when they turned right onto Henderson, left the road and ran onto the sidewalk, hitting the patio. The driver then drove away, and no one was injured.
