ROCKWALL, Texas — Officers with the Rockwall Police Department said 21-year-old Brian Calder was arrested on Friday, Oct. 4 for allegedly attempting to kidnap a 10-year-old girl.
According to a press release from police, officers responded to a report of a man attempting to abduct a 10-year-old girl around 12:30 p.m. in the 1000 block of W. Yellow Jacket Lane.
Police said the girl had just got off her school bus and was walking home when several witnesses saw Calder grab her by her backpack. However, she was able to escape, police said.
"I saw him start walking real fast behind the children," said Shantikamari Coleman. "It gave something away. It was just a feeling in me that I didn’t trust this man. "
She told WFAA she saw the man grab the girl's bookbag. The girl ran away, Coleman said.
"I asked him what the F he was doing," she said.
Coleman said she followed Calder as he walked back to the road and toward Rockwall High School.
"We weren't going to let him get away."
She said police arrived quickly and arrested Calder near the baseball fields across from the school.
"I knew what he was doing wasn’t right. You don’t do that to a child," Coleman said.
Police said Calder was taken to the Rockwall County Detention Center where he was booked and charged with attempted kidnapping.
Rockwall PD said this investigation is ongoing.
