Local musicians aiming to prevent suicide in Dallas artist community

Anthony Delabano said music was a constant reminder of his loss. His lead singer, Frankie Campagna, and bassist, Adam Carter, both took their lives in 2011 within months of each other.

The Dallas music and art community has been hit hard by suicide in recent years. After losing two band members, the surviving drummer of Spector 45 was inspired to make a change.

Anthony Delabano said music was a constant reminder of his loss. His lead singer, Frankie Campagna, and bassist, Adam Carter, both took their lives in 2011 within months of each other.

Delabano said this led him to his own suicidal thoughts. “When my friends took their lives, it was the end of my life,” he said.

Delabano eventually sought help, but realized mental health care was unaffordable. He didn’t think it was fair. “I wanted to do something about this and create a movement and that’s really where this started.”

He created Foundation 45 in honor of Campagna and Carter.

Part of the foundation is Dr. Peter Thomas, who is also a musician. He saw the need in the arts community. “Part of what we’re trying to do with Foundation 45 is to bring about hope,” said Dr. Thomas. He said the foundation holds support groups three times a week. There are also free individual counseling sessions available for those in need.

“For every one person who seeks help, there are four other people out there who don’t seek services,” said Dr. Thomas. He said there is a stigma and the reality of suicide rates is scary.

Through Foundation 45, they hope to put an end to suicide. Through Campagna and Carter’s story, they hope to save other lives.
