North Texas juvenile kills stepfather to stop him from assaulting his mother, officials say

LILLIAN, Texas — A North Texas juvenile shot and killed his 48-year-old stepfather Wednesday night while trying to stop the man from assaulting his mother, according to the Johnson County Sheriff's Office.

The sheriff's office said they received a 911 call from the juvenile saying he shot his dad. When deputies arrived at the home in Lillian, Texas, the man was transported to a hospital in Mansfield, where he died, officials said.

The Johnson County Sheriff's Office said deputies interviewed the juvenile, his mother, and other witnesses. According to those interviews, the juvenile said he shot his father to stop him from continuing to assault his mother. The juvenile was later released to his grandmother, according to the sheriff's office.

Medical records state the man died at 11:20 p.m. Wednesday at the hospital in Mansfield and his cause of death was listed as a gunshot wound in the back. WFAA is not naming the man who died to protect the identity of the juvenile, who has not been arrested or charged in relation to this incident. 

Johnson County Sheriff's Office told WFAA the investigation of this incident is ongoing.
