The National Weather Service says an EF-1 tornado tore through portions of the city of Lewisville early Wednesday morning.
"It sounded like a big gush," said Johnie Cottrell, a resident whose home was badly hit.
A neighborhood that lives on the flight path of DFW Airport was also in the path of the tornado.
Lionel Jaramillo arrived Wednesday to help a friend who lost half of his home.
"The living room, dining room, and the kitchen; those are the main ones," Jaramillo said.
Meanwhile the family is confined to their bedrooms for the night. They are also waiting on their quickly cracking chimney to come down.
"It's just a waiting game," Jaramillo said.
What cannot wait is the recovery. The City of Lewisville has put out a mobile unit for residents and contractors to help people with permitting and licensing.
"We figure two or three days from now, they're gonna want the permits to replace a fence, do the repair work on the roof," said James Kunke, a spokesman for the city. The City says the mobile unit will move to another site on Thursday.
The Cottrells hid in the closet. The tornado took a path through their home leaving the attic exposed.
"Whatever happened has happened. It happens so fast you don't have time to even get scared," said Johnie Cottrell.
There is some time now to rebuild what can be rebuilt and let go of things that are too far gone.
This Lewisville community is now set on the path to recovery.
