Lake Dallas Animal Shelter permanently closes

The city of Lake Dallas has contracted with a new provider for animal services.

LAKE DALLAS, Texas — The Lake Dallas Animal Shelter has permanently closed its doors.

The Lake Dallas City Council previously approved the closure of the animal shelter. Lake Dallas has contracted with All American Dogs in Pilot Point to provide animal services for the city beginning Tuesday.

"We are in an increasingly tight environment for municipal budgets in Texas," City Manager Luke B. Olson said in a statement. "While it is difficult, closing the animal shelter and our animal services department will save taxpayers $200,000 over the next year, money that can be reinvested in providing essential city services and road projects for our growing community."

All American Dogs provides animal services to 29 municipalities.

“If an animal is found and is chipped or discovered to belong to a Lake Dallas resident, All American Dogs will deliver the animal back to the homeowner,” a press release from the city of Lake Dallas reads. “In case of a late-night animal rescue call, Lake Dallas Police will pick up and transport the animal to police headquarters (with food and water) until it is picked up from All American Dogs.”

Staff members from the Lake Dallas Animal Shelter (two full-time staff members and a part-time employee) will receive four weeks’ salary and insurance through the end of October, according to the city.
