A change in security is coming to the Katy Trail.
The Friends of the Katy Trail posted on its website Tuesday that due to the officer shortage, the off-duty officers that usually helped patrol the trail during peak hours were pulled off of the trail beat to "address more pressing matters" in the department.
As a result, the Friends of the Katy Trail just hired two private security officers from Ameritex Guard Services.
The private security guards will be on the Katy Trail from 5 p.m.-9 p.m. on weekdays and 7 a.m.-5 p.m. on weekends.
In response, Dallas Police Department told WFAA what officers do on their off-duty time is unrelated to the shortage. They assure residents that on-duty officers will still be present on the trail, and overtime will be utilized as needed.
The new security guards will be patrolling the area on bikes or golf carts and will work in conjunction with other DPD bike officers to patrol the trail.
"Our staff, board, and safety committee keep trail safety on the forefront and work hard all year long to ensure the Katy Trail remains a safe retreat for you and your family," the statement read. "We ask that all Katy Trail users do their part as well. Look out for one another on the Katy Trail and call 911 if you ever feel unsafe."
