ROCKWALL, Texas — Another Ikea store could soon be assembled in North Texas.
The Swedish furniture company known for budget-friendly pieces and restaurants serving meatballs, is eyeing Rockwall for a potential new store. Ikea already has stores in Frisco and Grand Prairie, and a smaller site in Southlake, according to their website.
“As IKEA evolves, our transformation journey remains focused on becoming more affordable, accessible, and convenient for our customers. We're excited to continue the process of our site development plans in the Rockwall, TX area,” an Ikea U.S. spokesperson said.
The potential Ikea store in Rockwall would be part of a development at the corner of Stodghill Road and the I-30 frontage road that would include other retailers and multi-family properties, according to city council documents posted online. The Rockwall City Council Monday voted to send the issue back to the city’s Planning and Zoning Commission for consideration at their Sept. 24 meeting after the applicant requested changes.
Rockwall’s Planning and Zoning Commission previously voted against approving a zoning change requested for the project on Sept. 10.
Ikea U.S. reported about $6 billion in retail sales in 2023 and has been expanding, reportedly opening 71 new sales locations around the world last year, according to their website. Ikea opened its first U.S. store more than 30 years ago.
Ikea isn’t the only retailer with designs on Rockwall. H-E-B plans to open a store there on the southwest corner of John King Boulevard and I-30.
