Sally McMullin is known for helping others. But now, she needs help.
McMullin, who is uninsured, was left with more than $100,000 in medical bills after she was injured in a hit-and-run.
The director of the Dallas branch of the "I Have A Dream" Foundation community outreach organization was seriously injured while she she was hit by a car June 13 outside the Methodist Charlton Medical Center in South Dallas.
McMullin was crossing the street, and the driver fled after hitting her.
She was left with a broken femur and three broken ribs. She also underwent surgery.
McMullin has worked for the foundation for 15 years, helping hundreds of kids living in low-income neighborhoods throughout Dallas.
“I don't have my own kids biologically, but I call them my kids,” the mentor said.
Tamesha Epps was 6 when she met McMullin.
“She's my heart. That's what I have her in my phone as,” Epps said. “I feel like everything I know and some is because of her.”
And that is why so many are so hurt that McMullin is struggling.
“I'm a spiritual person, so I know that in the end I'm going to be OK, but this is definitely a challenging time,” McMullin said.
Her friends started an online fundraiser hoping to help.
A GoFundMe page has been set up for McMullin.
