Dallas' toughened smoking law has been in effect for almost 24 hours, snuffing out smoking in bars and pools halls.

So how is the city enforcing the ordinance?

At the West End Pub in downtown Dallas, they'll serve up your favorite beverage, along with a snack if you like but what they won't let you do is light up.

At Dallas' 1,100 bars the no smoking signs are supposed to be up and the ash trays cleared away under the new restrictions to the city's anti-smoking law.

The regulars at Buffalo Joe's Grill and Bar in far north Dallas don't like it.

"I think I'm heading to Lewisville where I can smoke, until Lewisville passes a law," said Jim Elliott, a bar patron.

Bar owners say they expect some confusion and perhaps a shift in clientele as non-smokers come in and some smokers drift out.

"We've already had a few people walk out today, coming in to see if they could smoke," said bar owner, Bryan Lusha.

Non smokers like clearing the air.

To keep it that way, the city says enforcement will follow complaints.

Inspectors won't proactively look for violations.

Bar customers, who see others light up, or managers and owners not enforcing the law, should call 311.

"Because of the type of environments that they are in you know, late night, possible drinking, we're not encouraging anyone to approach others about smoking but just call the call into 311," said Karen Rayzer, from Dallas Environmental and Health Services.

Inspectors will follow up.

If a violation is confirmed, the bar owner, the customer or both could face a fine of $200.
