HALTOM CITY, Texas — An officer with the Haltom City Police Department discharged their service weapon while arresting a burglary suspect who allegedly pointed a gun at officers on Sunday morning, officials said.
At around 7:10 a.m. on Sunday, officers responded to a report of an armed suspect attempting to break into an apartment in the Spanish Square Apartments at 2029 Dayton Street, northwest of White Lake Hills and southwest of Richland Hills.
The suspect, who was later identified by police as 21-year-old Victor Castro, was able to get into the apartment and a struggle reportedly started inside between the suspect and the residents, officials said.
When the officers got to the apartment, they encountered a man with a firearm pointed toward them, police said. One officer "discharged their service weapon," police said, although they did not make it clear how or where the officer shot his gun.
No one was injured during the incident, according to police.
A press release said Castro was subsequently apprehended and taken into custody without further incident. Castro faces charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and burglary of a habitation, police said.
The officer who fired his weapon has been placed on administrative leave, Haltom City police said, citing standard procedure during an officer-involved shooting investigation.
Police said the gun was bought by the suspect.
"The Haltom City Police Department takes the use of force very seriously and understands the significant public interest in such incidents," the department said in its press release. "We are committed to conducting a thorough and transparent investigation and will provide further updates as appropriate."
