A man accused of killing a manager at Putt-Putt Golf and Games in Hurst in 2006 was found guilty of capital murder today.
Paul David Storey, 23, is one of two men accused of killing Jonas Paul Cherry, 28, during a robbery on Oct. 16, 2006.
Mr. Storey did not react when the verdict was read. The jury had deliberated for about two hours. The punishment phase was expected to begin this afternoon.
Christy Jack, an assistant district attorney, told the jury during closing arguments that the physical evidence and Mr. Storey's own statements to police are enough to find him guilty of capital murder.
"When he finished him off, he shot him four times," Ms. Jack said. "He not only ensured his death, he guaranteed it."
Larry Moore, Mr. Storey's attorney, told the jury that the state failed to prove that Mr. Storey was responsible.
"You can not convict Paul Storey based on his statements," Mr. Moore said.
During the trial, jurors viewed a taped interview that Mr. Storey gave investigators just days after the crime. He said he stumbled onto the robbery after stopping there because of car trouble.
Mr. Cherry was found near an open safe, shot in the back of the head and the back of his legs.
Tarrant County prosecutors have said they will seek the death penalty.
Mark Porter, 22, who is also accused of being part of the shooting, is charged with capital murder. His trial date is pending.
