DALLAS — Tom Thumb is readying to begin work on three new stores in North Texas. It’s the first time the grocer plans to break ground on three stores at the same time.

The grocery store chain will host groundbreaking events Wednesday for three new stores set to open between the fall of 2025 and spring of 2026 in Midlothian, Sanger and Sunnyvale.

Tom Thumb, which is owned by Albertsons Companies, says the new stores are meant to serve the growing populations on the outskirts of Dallas and Fort Worth.

“We look forward to serving our guests and communities in all three of these communities,” said Tom Thumb President Wes Jackson. “We are thrilled to be breaking ground in three communities on the same day for the first time in our 76-year history. North Texas is experiencing tremendous growth and Tom Thumb, DFW’s grocer since 1948, is committed to growing along with it!”

The new 59,000-square-foot store in Midlothian at FM 1387 and N. Walnut Grover Road is expected to open in the spring of 2026.

The new 50,000-square-foot store at 1431 W. Chapman Drive in Sanger is expected to open in fall of 2025.

The new 59,000-square-foot store at 3400 N. Belt Line Road in Sunnyvale is expected to open in the fall of 2025.

Each store is expected to feature an in-store Starbucks coffee kiosk, a pharmacy including a drive-thru, and drive-up grocery pick-up

The announcement of the groundbreaking for the new stores comes as Tom Thumb’s parent company Albertsons explores a nearly $25 billion merger with Kroger. The merger, which could result in more than two dozen stores being sold in North Texas, has faced regulatory scrutiny.

Tom Thumb has stores in 34 states and the District of Columbia, with 24 banners including Albertsons, Safeway, Tom Thumb, Randalls, and United Supermarkets.
