Grandmother, former coaches mourn the loss of 17-year-old shot football player, killed in North Texas

Dallas Police say the 17-year-old was shot and killed Friday night after a fight broke out between him and another person.

DALLAS, Texas — David Washington loved the game of football. The 17-year-old had dreams of going to college and playing pro one day.

“That was his dream,” said LeVetta Tuggar, David’s grandmother. “That’s all he’s ever done in life is play football.”

Tuggar said her grandson started playing football at a young age. From 9-13, he played under Coach Aaron Sands and Cedric Womack in youth football.

“David was like the heartbeat like he was the kid that was going to get everybody crunk,” said Sands.

“He played with a lot of energy. A lot of kids in Dallas look up to a kid like that, “said Womack.

On Friday night, Dallas Police said the 17-year-old was shot and killed. Police said it happened on the 8000 block of Polk Street around 10:50 pm.

DPD said its preliminary investigation revealed a large crowd gathered in the area, and the group of people started following David.

A fight broke out between them, DPD said, and "an unknown suspect shot Washington."

Washington was transported to a local hospital, where he died, according to DPD. Dallas ISD officials confirmed to WFAA that Washington was a senior at Justin F. Kimball High School within their district.

“I don’t understand…and I question, why kill my grandson…why would y’all do that,” said Tuggar.

Tuggar said she wants others to put down the guns. She said the entire family is rocked by this unexpected tragedy.

“I won’t see that smile anymore. I won’t hear granny I love you,” said Tuggar.
