GLENN HEIGHTS, Texas — A person suspected in a robbery was killed by police last week in Glenn Heights, according to the Ellis County Sheriff's Office.

The sheriff's office said Glenn Police Department officers responded at approximately 2:45 p.m. Friday, Feb. 9, to the 2500 block of Sunburst Drive for a robbery call. When officers got to the scene, they encountered people matching the description of the robbery suspects, the sheriff's office said.

Officers tried to arrest the robbery suspects, but one of the suspects fired at officers, and then officers returned fire, according to the Glenn Heights Police Chief Nick Bristow. One of the robbery suspects was struck and later died at the hospital, the sheriff's office said.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with all those affected by this unfortunate incident," Ellis County Sheriff Brad Norman said in a release.

The officers involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of an internal investigation, according to the sheriff's office. There will be two concurrent investigations: One by the Texas Rangers in collaboration with the Ellis County Sheriff's Office for the officer-involved shooting, and the other by the Ellis County Sheriff's Office looking at the robbery that initiated the police response.

The Ellis County Sheriff's Office said further updates about the shooting will be provided as more details become available. Anyone with information relevant to either of the investigations is urged to contact the Ellis County Sheriff's Office. Witnesses or individuals with pertinent information can contact the Crime Stoppers of Ellis County tip line at (972)937-7297.
