GARLAND, Texas — The Garland Independent School District has announced it has canceled classes and closed all district offices for May 30, the last day of the school year, after severe storms hit the area earlier this week.
There will be no make-up days for the days missed due to the storm, district officials said, and the school year will be concluded.
"The challenges posed by the recent weather have made it impractical for campuses to continue with school," the district said in a statement. "While many families were fortunate not to lose power or have their homes impacted by the storms, many of our GISD communities continue to be impacted."
More information about the closure of this school year can be found here.
The Garland area was among those that fell under a tornado warning around 6 a.m. Tuesday as severe storms powered through North Texas.
Initial damage in the area was not yet known.
Garland school district officials said they decided to cancel classes "with student and staff safety as our top concern," according to a statement. All after-school activities have also been canceled on Tuesday.
Students who were on buses Tuesday morning were being taken to the closest Garland ISD campus building until conditions got safer, officials said.
