FRISCO, Texas — With every passing week we're learning more and more about the proposed Universal theme park project in Frisco.
On Saturday, the Frisco Chamber of Commerce helped organize a meet and greet where residents can better understand their new possible Universal neighbors.
"It's really about educating the public on what this project is and isn't," said Frisco Mayor Jeff Cheney.
Cheney says the project has some misperceptions and is hoping these meetings help. Over the last several weeks, residents have had concerns about traffic. Especially those families who live in the Cobb Hill neighborhood off Panther Creek Parkway. Maps displayed on Saturday show the project along the Dallas North Tollway and Panther Creek Parkway with the actual park in the north east part of the parcel.
"This is actually a much less dense project than what it is zoned for," Cheney said.
The city says Universal's proposed traffic count is 20% of what is predicted for the site. The city also says it's equivalent to having a Costco. There is still construction scheduled to expand the Dallas North Tollway by 2025. That may ease some concerns.
"When we first heard the project, we were apprehensive and we had a lot of concerns, and turned to excitement," the mayor said.
That excitement is over the economic potential for the city. A smaller theme park geared to children will draw a local and regional audience. Universal in Frisco is still far from reality. It still needs the blessing of Planning and Zoning and after that, city council.
