FORT WORTH, Texas — The city of Fort Worth is warning residents Friday of a scam involving people posing as water utility employees or contractors.

The city says it received a complaint concerning an elderly customer who was robbed by two men claiming to be contractors on the city's east side on Wednesday, May 10.

According to the report, the suspects allegedly told the customer that they hit a main water line, contaminating the customer’s water. Then, the two suspects requested access to the resident’s home so the water could be tested.

The city said all water department employees drive marked vehicles, wear uniforms with the city logo and carry a city-issued photo identification badge. They rarely need access to a customer’s home, unless the resident is the one who initiated the complaint with the department.

The city also says that laboratory staff usually take water quality samples from an outside faucet.

City officials are urging residents to request to see a photo ID of anyone who indicates they represent the city.

Residents are asked to report any incidents involving people posing as city officials to call Fort Worth Police Department’s non-emergency line at 817-392-4222 and call Fort Worth Water at 817-392-4477. Dial 911 if it’s an emergency.
