Fort Worth PD releases bodycam, surveillance videos of shootout with burglary suspect who killed himself

Officers had responded around 9 p.m. that night to a burglar alarm in the 700 block of Beach Street, northeast of downtown Fort Worth.

FORT WORTH, Texas — Fort Worth police officials on Monday released video of officers getting into a shootout with a burglary suspect who killed himself after running away from the officers.

The video showed officers' Dec. 12 encounter with Shane Miller, 35, according to a police news release.

Officers had responded around 9 p.m. that night to a burglar alarm in the 700 block of Beach Street, northeast of downtown Fort Worth.

When officers arrived, they saw Miller with a backpack on the property of a business, which was closed, the release said.

The officers detained Miller and began speaking with him when he started running north on Beach Street. Two officers began chasing him, and one of the officers tried to stop Miller by deploying his Taser.

As Miller ran away, police said, he pulled a handgun from his waistband and fired two shots at the officers.

The officers weren't struck, but one fell to the ground, and the other fired several shots at Miller, police said.

Miller kept running and went between two buildings. Two more officers arrived at the scene and began chasing Miller, who "continued firing rounds at officers," police said.

Three of the officers fired shots at Miller during the pursuit, which was unfolding near a Taco Cabana restaurant. The officers lost sight of Miller when he ran through the intersection of Beach Street and Texas 121 and went under the highway bridge, police said.

The officers then went back to their vehicles to continue looking for Miller.

Around that same time, according to surveillance video released by police, Miller was seen on camera walking toward a McDonald's off 121. Miller crossed the road but tripped on a storm drain and fell to the sidewalk.

When he sat up, he shot himself in the head, police said. The video released by police on Monday appears to show Miller raise a gun to his head, but it did not show the shooting.

Police said officers found Miller about one minute later and tried to render aid. He was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Police said officers recovered Miller's gun where he fell and also found multiple loaded handgun magazines.

The police department's major case unit and internal affairs are investigating the shooting. Police will then forward the case to the Tarrant County District Attorney's Office for review.
