American Airlines is buying 260 new aircraft

The additional aircraft include 85 Airbus A321neo, 85 Boeing 737 MAX 10, and 90 Embraer E175, according to a company news release.

FORT WORTH, Texas — Fort Worth-based American Airlines is ordering 260 new aircraft, pushing the company's fleet above 1,000 in the coming years.

The additional aircraft include 85 Airbus A321neo, 85 Boeing 737 MAX 10, and 90 Embraer E175, according to a company news release.

American also will have options and purchase rights for an additional 193 aircraft. Boeing is changing 30 of American's current 737 MAX 8 orders to 737 MAX 10 as part of the deal.

The aircraft will allow American to expand its premium seating options by more than 20% by 2026, according to the company. The company said the new purchases will also help keep the airline's fleet the youngest among U.S. carriers; American has taken on 600 new aircraft since 2013, including 31 mainline aircraft in 2023.

The airline's active mainline fleet currently sits at 965 aircraft, while its regional fleet is at 556.

“Over the past decade, we have invested heavily to modernize and simplify our fleet, which is the largest and youngest among U.S. network carriers,” American’s CEO Robert Isom said in a news release. “These orders will continue to fuel our fleet with newer, more efficient aircraft so we can continue to deliver the best network and record-setting operational reliability for our customers.”
