Bob Gooding, a News 8 anchor from 1961 to 1979, died Sunday afternoon at his East Texas home.

Gooding, who started with WFAA radio, had been battling cancer for quite some time.

Bert Shipp, who worked with Gooding and had a 40-year career at WFAA-TV, said Gooding got his Channel 8 anchor job after he walked by the studio and noticed a line for auditions. Gooding grabbed a script, joined the line and got the job that very day, Shipp said.

Gooding signed off each night with the same phrase: "Goodnight and better tomorrows."

He died at the age of 76.
