Family of 18-year-old shot and killed is demanding answers, seeking justice for their loved one

The family of William Caleb Young described him as an "old soul" who loved spending time with family.

DALLAS, Texas — The family of William Caleb Young is demanding answers after the 18-year-old was shot and killed on Tuesday.

Dallas Police arrested and charged 20-year-old Faiza Aballa Sheref and charged her with manslaughter in Young's death. Young’s family said the two were in a relationship. Police said the investigation is still ongoing.

His aunts Lauren and Stephanie Matlock and Shalinda Bell described their nephew as an “old soul” and someone humble.

“He's our baby boy," said Lauren Matlock. "All our kids grew up together."

A new affidavit gives more insight into what allegedly happened. Documents say Sheref was inside Young’s apartment and picked up a gun that had been sitting on a dog cage. The affidavit states Young grabbed the gun from her and removed the bullets.

Sheref was playing with the gun when it went off and a bullet hit Young, according to the affidavit.

“My baby was 18," Young's mother DeAnna Roney said. "I just want justice for my son.”

Officers responded to the shooting call at 6:05 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 13 in the 17500 block of Dallas Parkway, according to a release from Dallas police.

When officers arrived, they found Young shot. He was taken to a hospital, where he died, police said.

“It's put a hole in my heart that can never be filled,” said Bell.

Young’s family said he enjoyed spending time with his siblings and cousins. He also loved playing football in high school.

“My sister will never get to see him get married; she'll never have a grandchild. These are things that were ripped from here,” said Bell.

A GoFundMe was created to help the family with funeral expenses.
