D/FW AIRPORT American Airlines Flight 61, bound for Tokyo, landed safely at Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport Monday afternoon after reportedly developing engine problems after takeoff.

The Boeing 777 jumbo jet with 224 passengers and a crew of 12 had taken off at D/FW at 12:18 p.m. for what was planned to be a non-stop journey to Narita Airport in Tokyo. The flight crew reported difficulties with one of the plane's two engines on the way and elected to return to North Texas.

The jet touched down at 3:40 p.m., trailed by a convoy of emergency vehicles.

Passengers were expected to continue their journey to Japan on another aircraft at 5:30 p.m.

The airline said the jet exhibited symptoms of a fuel leak in the left engine.
