FORT WORTH, Texas — An apartment fire in Fort Worth displaced 60 people and sent two people suffering from smoke inhalation to the hospital, the Fort Worth Fire Department said.
The blaze began around 6:15 p.m. Wednesday at the Handley Oaks Apartments on Handley Drive in Southeast Fort Worth.
"The flames were just like flying out the windows," said Leisha Crain, who lives in the complex. "The roof was just caught on fire and started burning."
Crain said she was alerted to the fire by neighbors banging on her front door. When she got out of the building, she saw flames coming from a first-floor apartment near the leasing office, she said.
"When our crews arrived on scene they witnessed heavy fire that was coming from the apartment complex," said Fort Worth Fire Department Public Information Officer Craig Trojacek.
He said the fire was quickly upgraded to a two-alarm response because it was in the middle of the complex.
Trojacek said eight units were damaged by smoke, fire and water. Occupants of five others were temporarily displaced while crews repaired gas and electrical lines.
