SOUTHLAKE, Texas — An 83-year-old woman died of hypothermia in Southlake early Thursday morning, police said.
Martina Clara Grammer was identified as the victim, according to the Tarrant County Medical Examiner's Office.
Police said they received a call about 2 a.m. Thursday from her husband at their home in a residential building in the 300 block of Central Avenue.
The husband said they went to bed at 10 p.m. Several hours later, he woke up and saw that his wife was missing and the front door of their home was left open.
He also told police that his wife had gone missing before.
Southlake police began searching the area, along with help from Keller and Colleyville police. About an hour and a half later, at 3:30 a.m., Grammer was found outside of a rooftop access of her building, unconscious and not breathing, police said.
Officers tried life-saving measures, including CPR, until medics arrived. They took Grammer to Baylor, Scott and White Hospital in Grapevine, where she died.
Her death was ruled an accident.
While several fatal crashes have been reported during this week's ice storm, Grammer's death is the first known hypothermia death in North Texas.
MedStar, the main ambulance service for Fort Worth, was reporting a total of 25 hypothermia patients they've treated, including 11 in serious condition, as of Friday morning.
Hypothermia data from other cities was not immediately available on Friday morning.
Temperatures were expected rise above freezing on Friday and warm into the 50s over the weekend.
