DFW Airport expecting record-breaking number of travelers this holiday season

Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) is expecting 4.5 million customers to travel through the airport between Dec. 14 and Jan. 2.

FORT WORTH, Texas — Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) is no stranger to foot traffic, but between December 14 and January 2, the American Airlines hub is expecting 4.5 million travelers.

It's record-breaking numbers.

The busiest days are projected to be Thursday, Dec. 21 and Friday, Dec. 22, with 243,000 and 246,000 travelers, respectively. This is 4.8% higher than last year’s winter holiday break, and there is a chance the airport will continue to set holiday travel records.

Sharon McCloskey with DFW said the airport is ready.

"DFW is the second busiest airport in the world, so we see high volumes every day," McCloskey said.

DFW reminds customers to prepare not only for their travel but also for those picking up or dropping off family members as they travel in and out of DFW.

Travelers were seen getting a head-start on their Christmas getaways at DFW Thursday. Brenda Osbourne told WFAA she is headed to Jamaica with her family.

She followed the long-and-true advice of getting to the airport early.

"I need this vacation," Osbourne said.

Osbourne said she "saved money and dreamed" for this trip and made it a point to make it a successful travel day.

Like Osbourne, DFW said with the increase in holiday traffic; customers should arrive at least two hours before their flight so they have time to park, check-in, clear security, and get to their gate.

"This season, give yourself the gift of time," McCloskey said.

In addition to sharing these tips, McCloskey said the airport has options once travelers are here to make them feel more at ease.

On Thursday, DFW's K9 crew of therapy dogs hosted a holiday-themed Paw Parade in Terminal D.

Each Friday in December will be Festive Fridays, which will feature live local musical groups and local artists inside the terminals.

McCloskey also noted leisurely shopping and dining in the terminals and even a yoga studio in Terminal E.
