Denton Fine Arts Theatre to receive $1.6 million revitalization

Construction is expected to last 12 months, with an opening expected in summer 2025.

DENTON, Texas — The Denton Fine Arts Theatre is about to get a big facelift, as the Denton City Council just approved an economic development incentive agreement that allots $1.6 million towards renovations to the shite.

This revitalization will be funded through the city's Tax Increment Reinvestment Zone. Previously, the theatre was only open occasionally throughout the early 2000s for events. It originally opened as the Graham Opera House in 1885, but first closed its doors in 1982 after a fire.

Construction is expected to last 12 months, with an opening expected in summer 2025.

The theater will feature three theatres: a main theatre, a smaller theatre with a bar on the second floor overlooking the square, and a private theatre on the third floor. The first floor will also have its own bar and concession stand.

Other benefits the theatre is expected to offer the city upon reopening include job training for university students, hosting cultural events and acting as a venue for local festivals.

The project is being led by developers Alex Payne and Brad Andrus, who have a history of investing in Denton.

"Collaborating with dedicated developers to breathe new life into the Fine Arts Theatre represents a pivotal moment for Denton," said Assistant City Manager Christine Taylor in a statement. “This project provides an opportunity for historic preservation of an iconic anchor on the square that has so much meaning to our community.”

Fine Arts Theatre must meet certain conditions before the funds are released, including a minimum investment of $5.8 million and the issuance of a certificate of occupancy.
