Six students and a driver are safe after the bus they were in got stuck in water Tuesday morning.

DENTON -- Six students and a driver are safe after the bus they were in got stuck in water Tuesday morning.

The bus was heading to Hodge Elementary School when the bus hit a dip on Elm Bottom Circle near FM 428.

Water from recent rains were in the dip and got into the engine, causing it to stall.

The Denton Fire Department’s swift water rescue firefighters responded to the scene.

“We opted to walk out there to them and we just carried them out one by one,” said firefighter Michael Ventrca.

Rescuers put the kids in a boat and then took them to safely.

“They were a little scared,” Ventrca said. “After we got there, they just said they had a good story to tell when they get to school. they were pretty excited.”

The students were put onto another bus and made it to school on time.

Patty Jensen, Hodge’s principal, said the kids actually enjoyed it.

“They told me they got to ride in a boat,” Jensen said. “They were not wet at all. I was shocked that even their shoes were dry...We’re just glad that they were safe and kind off tried to get them into their routine as quickly as possible.”
