LEWISVILLE, Texas — In February 2023, Daniel White was shot and killed inside his Lewisville Pawn Shop during an attempted robbery, police said.
As the trial for his accused killer, Jatevon Johnson, begins nearly two years later, White’s widow Yolanda gathered with loved ones at the shop Sunday night to honor his memory through prayer.
“People always talk about the last words you hear from someone,” Yolanda told WFAA. “That morning, when he left for work, he said he loved me, and I’ve held onto that all this time," she cried.
Yolanda described her husband as a man of deep faith and said hosting a prayer vigil felt like the right thing to do ahead of their day in court.
“We’re here tonight to pray that the truth be told to the jury,” she told family members and friends who joined her in prayer.
Family members shared emotional memories during the gathering.
“I missed you, Daniel, at Thanksgiving,” Yolanda's brother said. “We’re gonna miss you at Christmas, and tomorrow we will be with you in the courtroom.”
“I loved him, and I still love him," Yolanda's sister said.
“I want him to be proud of me,” Yolanda told WFAA at the vigil. “I do feel like he watches over me, and I just want him to be proud that I’m doing the right thing for him. I know he sees it.”
“Justice will be handed down, either now or later,” she said. “I have faith. Whether it’s now or later, it’s gonna happen.”
Jury selection for the trial began Monday morning.
