103-year-old killed, another person critically injured in Denton house fire, officials say

An elderly man died and a woman was critically injured after being trapped by a house fire, according to the Denton Fire Department.

DENTON, Texas — One person died and another was hospitalized after being critically injured in a Denton house fire, officials said. 

The Denton Fire Department responded to a house fire shortly before 11:20 p.m. Dec. 18 in the 2000 block of Houston Place, Denton fire officials said in a social media post. Officials said that two people were reportedly trapped in the fire. 

At 11:20 p.m., fire officials called in a second alarm, requesting assistance from other departments, the post states. An elderly man and woman were rescued from the home in critical condition, fire officials said. 

The male victim, identified as 103-year-old Dante Bassi, later died from his injuries, officials said. The female victim was flown to a burn center. 

Firefighters continued searching for a third victim but no one else was found, officials said. The post states that the fire was under control by 11:38 p.m. 

The Lake Cities Fire Department and Denton County Emergency Services also responded to the fire, fire officials said.
