DENTON -- Denton County has issued its first marriage license to a same-sex couple, three days after the U.S. Supreme Court legalized gay marriage across the nation.
Denton County Clerk Juli Luke said there were issues with her office's computer system that kept it from changing the language on the license.
Some within the LGBTQ community felt it was a little suspicious to not give out licenses, but Luke said she would start giving them out on Monday once she had the correct software.
Sure enough, Monday morning the first license was issued to Sara Bollinger and Whitney Hennen. They've been together for five years and had a union ceremony on June 6.
They told News 8 they didn't get married in another county on Friday because Denton is their home and has special meaning for them.
"It feels pretty incredible... growing up this didn't seem like something that was every gonna happen, and for us it was so important for us to get married in Denton cause this is where our roots our, this is where our family is. And so we're just really grateful and exhilarated that we could do that today," Bollinger said.
Luke says same-sex marriage is against her religious beliefs, but it is her duty as an elected public official to give out licenses.
