A Far North Dallas road will shut down for a year for DART rail construction

The 1/5-mile stretch of Hillcrest will shut down "to ensure the utmost safety for both the public and work crews" building the rail crossing across the road.

DALLAS — A stretch of Hillcrest Road in Far North Dallas will be shut down for the next year as crews work on a new DART line through the area, officials announced this week.

Hillcrest between McCallum Boulevard and Wester Way will be closed for a year, starting Thursday, Jan. 25, for construction on the new DART Silver Line, DART officials said in a news release.

The 1/5-mile stretch of Hillcrest will shut down "to ensure the utmost safety for both the public and work crews" building the rail crossing across the road.

The closed area of Hillcrest is near the Richardson and Plano city lines. The Silver Line is a years-long project that will run a 26-mile commuter rail line from Plano, across Richardson, Far North Dallas and Carrollton and ultimately connect to DFW Airport.

The Silver Line is expected to begin service in late 2025 to mid-2026.

For the shutdown of Hillcrest over the next year, officials will detour traffic to Coit Road on the east of Hillcrest and Preston Road to the west of Hillcrest. Dallas Fire-Rescue and police will still have emergency access to homes near the shutdown, when needed.

“While we understand that this temporary road closure will be an inconvenience to commuters and the adjacent community, public safety will always be our primary focus,” Dee Leggett, DART chief development officer, said in the release. “Due to the limited work area and the extent of excavation necessary, we’re taking every possible precaution for the safety of drivers, pedestrians, and our construction teams."
