Teen boy arrested in girl's shooting death in Dallas, jail records say

Police say Ikea Imari Hood died after she was found shot on Grambling Drive Sunday morning.

DALLAS — A 17-year-old girl was fatally shot in southern Dallas on Sunday morning, police said.

Officers responded around 10:40 a.m. to a shooting in the 700 block of Grambling Drive, near University Hills Boulevard and East Wheatland Road, according to a police news release.

Police learned that the victim, identified as 17-year-old Ikea Imari Hood, was shot by someone at the location and died there, the release said.

Police later identified the suspect as Trevon Darnell Wright, 17, saying an arrest warrant for a murder charge was issued for Wright. Wright was booked into the Dallas County Jail Tuesday morning, jail records show.

Hood's mother heard a noise around 10:30 a.m. Sunday, found her bedroom door was locked, went to the bedroom from the outside and found the window open, screen pushed outside, and discovered Hood with a gunshot wound and called 911, according to an arrest affidavit.

Dallas police sources told WFAA that Wright was the father of Hood's newborn baby, but Hood's mother told police the child was not Wright's, according to the affidavit. Hood had planned to tell Wright this news on Sunday, her mother told police.

Her family says Ikea and her boyfriend were on and off again for a couple of years and there was a history of domestic violence between them. They want to send a message to other victims of domestic violence.

"My best advice is to leave and talk to somebody and get the help,” said Hood's sister.

They want the community to remember her as a young woman who had everything to live for.

"She was beautiful. She was a beautiful soul, very vibrant. The life of the party. My sister was excited for her new journey of becoming a mother and growing a bond with all her siblings," said Hood's sister.

More information about Wright was not released. Police were still investigating the shooting Monday morning.

Lancaster Independent School District officials on Monday confirmed that Hood was a student at Lancaster High School.

"Her death represents a great loss for our district, and we will be providing counseling and grief services for students and staff members impacted by this tragedy," district officials said in a statement. "Our thoughts and prayers are with her entire family and the Lancaster High School community."

Hood's family has created a GoFundMe to help with funeral expenses.
