DALLAS — A U.S. Postal Service letter carrier was robbed in December, and now investigators are offering up to a $150,000 reward for information in the case, officials said.
The U.S. Postal Inspection Service sent a release Thursday about the robbery, which happened Dec. 28 at 3525 Colonial Ave. in Dallas, near Interstate 45 and Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard in southern Dallas.
Officials said there were two suspects in the robbery, and that they were wearing masks. More information about how the robbery happened was not released.
Officials did not report that anyone was injured in the robbery.
The US Postal Inspector says USPIS started a campaign in May of last year called Project Safe Delivery to help reduce these types of incidents. USPS is beginning to upgrade collection boxes to new electronic locks. It also tripled the reward money for information leading to a conviction.
"It's a serious crime," said Sean Smith, a postal inspector. "It's a federal investigation. We believe these types of reward amounts are justified in order to go after the individuals that are harming our postal employees."
Robbing a mail carrier is a federal felony which carries a sentence up to 10 years. Smith tells WFAA that sentence could carry enhancements depending on the nature of the crime.
Anyone with information about the robbery is asked to call the U.S. Postal Inspection Service at 1-877-876-2455 and reference the case number: 4220598-ROBB.
