BuzzBrews Kitchen, a small restaurant chain, has run into financial trouble.

Buzzbrews Inc., the Dallas-based company behind eateries known for hearty breakfasts and late hours, filed Dec. 11 for Chapter 7 bankruptcy protection in U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Northern District of Texas. Filings list Ernest Belmore as BuzzBrews president and estimated assets of up to $50,000 and liabilities of $500,000 to $1 million.

It was not clear what the bankruptcy filing meant for restaurant operations. There are two BuzzBrews locations: one on the North Central Expressway and one in Deep Ellum. Buzzbrews Inc. is listed in tax records as the owner of business personal property at each spot. But the Deep Ellum location was actually sold earlier this year, CultureMap reported.

BuzzBrews first opened in 2005. It had grown to a third location, in the Lakewood neighborhood, but the flagship location closed in August after eight years in business.

The North Central Expressway location was open when a reporter called last week but Belmore did not respond to a request for comment. Messages left with John Paul Stanford, an attorney with Quilling Selander Lownds Winslett and Moser PC representing BuzzBrews in bankruptcy court, were also not returned.

In the filings, BuzzBrews estimated it owes money to 50 to 99 creditors. A list of largest creditors has not yet been filed in court.

Unlike in Chapter 11 bankruptcies, where a company usually aims to restructure its debt and remain in business, Chapter 7 bankruptcies usually involve liquidation of assets.

Will Anderson contributed reporting.
