DALLAS — Dallas police say a suspect who was running away from an illegal game room fired a shot at officers, who responded by returning fire and striking him in the leg and chest.
Reginald Curry, 23, was identified as the suspect in the shooting, which happened Sunday in the 2900 block of West Wheatland Road, near Interstate 20 in southern Dallas, according to a police news release. Curry was hospitalized in critical condition but survived, police said.
No officers were injured.
The incident was captured on police body camera footage, which was released by officials in an update Tuesday.
Police said officers had responded around 12:30 a.m. Sunday to a 911 call about a robbery at the Wheatland Road location. When they arrived, they saw a man leaving the back door of a shopping center, saying he had been robbed.
The officers went through the door and found people participating in an illegal game room, according to the release.
Suspects ran out the front door of the building, where they encountered responding officers. Police said one of the suspects, later identified as Curry, turned and pointed a weapon and then fired a shot at the officers.
Multiple shots can be heard being fired on police bodycam video of the incident.
"He is armed and he is shooting," one of the officers said.
Curry kept running through a parking lot "while continuing to shoot at officers," the release said.
The officers took cover and fired back at Curry. The officers then saw him run behind another business on Wheatland, so they drove there in their patrol cars.
The release said the officers "gave loud commands for Curry to drop his weapon," but he "refused and continued to fire at officers."
The officers returned fire again and struck Curry in his leg and chest area.
Police gave Curry first aid at the scene, and then he was taken to a hospital. Police said Curry was in "critical, but stable condition."
The release said officers found one of Curry's weapons in the parking lot where he was running from police. They found another gun at the original location where the robbery was reported, and they found a third gun on Curry when they took him into custody, police said.
Curry faces three counts of aggravated assault on a public servant, according to the release.
Dallas police and the Dallas County District Attorney's Office are investigating the incident.
