Dallas skyline goes blue Wednesday night in show of support for Israel amidst conflict with Hamas

Earlier Wednesday, Dallas City Council unanimously voted to approve a resolution to condemn the attack on Israel by Hamas.

DALLAS โ€” The Dallas skyline turned blue on Wednesday night in a show of support for Israel amidst its ongoing conflict with Hamas.

It's the latest instance in which Downtown Dallas skyscrapers -- buildings most prominently including Bank of America Plaza, the Omni Hotel and Reunion Tower -- have altered their LED lights to show support for a cause.

The lighting of the skyline comes after Dallas City Council unanimously voted earlier in the day on Wednesday to approve a resolution to condemn the attack on Israel by Hamas.

"The City of Dallas strongly condemns this barbaric act of terrorism by Hamas, and we stand in solidarity with the people and State of Israel," Dallas Mayor Eric Johnson said in a press release announcing the unanimous vote on Wednesday.

Johnson was one of many prominent figures, including the Dallas Mavericks organization, to take to social media in the immediate wake of Hamas' initial attacks over the weekend to voice support for Israel. The mayor also, along with Sen. Ted Cruz, was among the estimated 2,000 in attendance at a prayer service hosted in support for Israel at Dallas' Temple Emanu-El on Tuesday.

Also on Wednesday, President Joe Biden condemned Hamas' attack as "the deadliest day for Jews since the Holocaust."

In all, more than 2,200 lives have been lost on both sides of the conflict, including at least 22 American citizens. At least a "handful" of U.S. citizens are also among the estimated 150 hostages captured by Hamas militants during their assault on Israel, White House national security spokesman John Kirby revealed on Wednesday.

"This attack was a campaign of pure cruelty โ€” not just hate, but pure cruelty โ€” against the Jewish people,โ€ Biden said to an audience of Jewish leaders gathered at the White House during his remarks.

The City of Dallas press released said that Dallas' local government "stands with Israel in its fight against Hamas, prays for those who have lost family members and friends, calls for the swift return of all hostages, and hopes for a lasting resolution."

"As a city that prioritizes our international partnerships and relationships, we hope this resolution will send a clear message to the international community as to our cityโ€™s values,โ€ Mayor Johnson added.
