Reactions pour in for North Texas officer killed in shooting

Dallas PD said flags at all city facilities will be flown at half-staff.

DALLAS — A Dallas police officer was shot and killed – and two other officers were injured – Thursday night in a shooting in the 900 block of East Ledbetter Drive.

A chase that ensued after the shooting ended in Lewisville when officers shot and killed the suspect -- later identified by multiple sources to WFAA as Corey Cobb-Bey -- after he got out of his vehicle with a "long gun," DPD said in a news release.

WFAA has been giving team coverage of the shooting since it happened and the latest updates will be posted here.

The two injured officers were in critical condition and stable condition, respectively.

In a post to X on Friday morning, Dallas PD Chief Eddie Garcia said simply: "No words."

"Our department is hurting," DPD Communications director Kristin Lowman said in an early morning press conference on Friday. "We ask tonight and this morning for the thoughts and prayers for our city, for not only those recovering in the hospital, but for our fallen, for their family and for their loved ones."

Darron Burks was identified to WFAA via sources as the officer who was killed. The identities of the other officers have not yet been released.

As mourners and fellow police department employees placed flowers on a squad car parked on the sidewalk in front of the DPD South Central Station, The Assist the Officer Foundation was preparing its tributes to the fallen and injured officers too.

“As of yesterday,” said Ed Lujan while looking at the memorial wall of names and faces at the offices of the Dallas Police Association. “It’s 93 now,” he said of the number of DPD officers killed in the line of duty.

"Just to know we have to add another name and another picture to the board, it hurts,” said Lujan the chairman of the Assist the Officer Foundation which helps officers and their families with financial assistance and counseling.

"He's a hero. He's definitely a hero,” he said of Officer Darron Burks. “And he's going to be missed.”

Condolences poured in from other police departments across the country and local officials in the wake of the shooting:

Dallas Interim City Manager Kimberly Bizor Tolbert

"On behalf of the City of Dallas, I want to express my deepest condolences and full support to the family of our fallen Dallas Police Officer. We cannot take for granted how precious life is and how courageous our first responders are to selflessly take the oath to protect and to serve. I would also like to extend our thoughts and full support to the two officers who were wounded. We are praying for your recovery. The City of Dallas is a family, and as we mourn the loss of one of our own, I ask that you continue to support and lift up the entire Dallas Police Department in prayer over the next several days and weeks. May God bless and keep them and may God Bless the City of Dallas."

Dallas Mayor Eric Johnson

"As you have likely heard, on Thursday night, Dallas lost a hero.

Officer Darron Burks was senselessly murdered in the line of duty. Two other officers — Senior Cpl. Jamie Farmer and Senior Cpl. Karissa David — were also wounded in the attack. The officers were targeted because they proudly wore this city’s uniform and badges. The police chief called the incident an “execution.”

Words cannot adequately describe how heartbreaking this attack was. Officer Burks exemplified the best of Dallas. Before he was a police officer, he was a teacher. He dedicated his life to serving others and to helping build a better, smarter, safer city.

Dallas puts public safety first and does not tolerate violent criminals. This city’s police officers courageously risk their lives every single day so the rest of us can sleep peacefully. And an attack against them — this city’s protectors — is an attack on all Dallas communities.

This has been a devastating few days. Moving forward in times of grief is a challenge for everyone. However, over the holiday weekend, Dallas has come together to support its police officers and their families. City flags are being flown at half-staff.

This city will continue to stand with all those grieving in the difficult days ahead. And as time moves on, we must never forget the sacrifice of Officer Burks — and the courage routinely displayed by his colleagues in the police department — in the ongoing fight to create a safer city.

That’s all for today. Other news can wait. For now, hug your loved ones a little tighter, and say a word of gratitude for Dallas officers and a prayer for Officer Burks’ friends and family. May he rest in peace, and may they find comfort in his memory and the impact he had on this city."

Dallas Congresswoman Jasmine Crockett

"It’s times like this that I feel like the worst friend in the world. I miss out on so much of what’s going on in my friend’s lives… yet they have always stood with & supported me. I had no idea that last night, my friend, a funny, salt of the earth, kind soul, had selflessly become Officer Burks & lost his life in the line of duty.  Please please please just text one friend to get an update on their lives, today. While I know tomorrow isn’t promised to anyone, it doesn’t stop the pain nor tears that are flowing. Thank you for your service, thank you for your friendship & until we meet again, rest in power, my friend."
