The most one-way U-Haul moves this year to DFW are not from California, believe it or not

The company looked at one-way U-Haul truck transactions for the first half of 2024 (Jan. 1 to July 1) and broke down the markets where the DFW moves came from.

DALLAS — Nearly half of residential moves in a calendar year happen between Memorial Day (May 27, 2024) and Labor Day weekends (Sept. 2, 2024), according to rental company U-Haul.

So, you've probably seen quite a few moving trucks in the past few months. Kaufman County (No. 1), Rockwall County (No. 2), and Ellis County (No. 8) all cracked the top 10 fastest-growing counties in America, per U.S. Census data reported by U.S. News & World Report in March.

Where are all of these people coming from? 

U-Haul looked at one-way truck transactions for the first half of 2024 (Jan. 1 to July 1) and broke down the markets where the Dallas-Fort Worth moves originated from. Here is what their migration trends found: 

Top states with residents making one-way U-Haul trips to DFW:

  1. Oklahoma
  2. Florida
  3. Louisiana
  4. California
  5. Arkansas
  6. Colorado
  7. Georgia
  8. Arizona
  9. Tennessee
  10. Missouri

Top cities with residents making one-way trips to DFW:

  1. Oklahoma City, OK
  2. Denver, CO
  3. Phoenix, AZ
  4. Atlanta, GA
  5. Tulsa, OK
  6. Los Angeles, CA
  7. Kansas City, MO
  8. New Orleans, LA
  9. Little Rock, AR
  10. Shreveport, LA

Top cities within Texas with residents moving to DFW:

  1. Houston
  2. Austin
  3. San Antonio
