DALLAS — You'll notice on Friday, Aug. 30, both the Texas and U.S. flags in the City of Dallas are flying at half-staff.
The flags are being lowered in honor of the Dallas police officer shot and killed Thursday night. In the wake of that shooting, which left two more officers injured, DPD said overnight that flags at all city facilities will be flown at half-staff throughout the day on Friday.
Three officers were shot – one of them fatally – in the 900 block of East Ledbetter Drive. Two of those three officers exchanged gunfire with a male suspect.
The officer who died was identified to WFAA via sources as Darron Burks. The identities of the other two officers and the suspect were still unknown.
In the wake of the East Ledbetter Drive shooting, a chase ensued along I-35E. Lewisville PD was called in to assist with the chase, officials said. According to an email obtained by WFAA from the Lewisville Police Chief to his staff, the suspect was chased by police to Lewisville and was fatally shot in the 1000 block of Stemmons Freeway.
The suspect allegedly got out of his vehicle with what police describe as a "long gun" and was shot by Dallas police officers, DPD said in a news release. The Lewisville Police Chief said none of the Lewisville officers fired their weapons.
The suspect died at the scene, police said.
Multiple sources later identified the suspect to WFAA as Corey Cobb. Public records also indicate that the white 2005 Buick Century sedan that was involved in the chase was registered to Cobb.
Sources told WFAA that the three DPD officers were hospitalized at two Dallas hospitals: Baylor Scott & White in Dallas and Methodist Dallas Medical Center.
Burks was a rookie cop who had just got off of his training for the night, DPD sources tell WFAA. A female officer had to undergo surgery and is in critical condition, the third officer was shot in the leg and expected to survive, DPD sources said.
As of this writing, the flag status statewide was listed as full-staff, which is decided by Governor Abbott's office.
