Residents unable to stop Lower Greenville re-development

The newest development is underway in Dallas' Lower Greenville neighborhood. But before construction can start, one of the oldest apartment complexes in the area has to come down.

DALLAS -- The newest development is underway in Dallas' Lower Greenville neighborhood.

But before construction can start, one of the oldest apartment complexes in the area has to come down.

For 20 years, Janay Cargile called the apartment complex home. That part of her life is over, and for her, Monday was a day of mourning.

"If you've been in Dallas for so many years, you know how many changes it goes through," Cargile said. "Greenville Avenue, it's home."

Cargile says management gave her 50-day notice to move out in December of 2015. She later realized that the apartment complex, built in the '30s, was going to be flattened.

Lower Greenville is growing and the land is valuable.

Stillwater Capital is the developer and on its website, plans call for a 36-unit development with an underground parking garage.

In a written statement, Robert Elliott of Stillwater says:

"We’re bringing in young families and offering nice developments for young families and young professionals to live in. This is a nice property that is affordable."

Monday morning, there's no stopping the demolition despite a grassroots effort. The Facebook page Save McCommas Colonial garnered support, but couldn't stop the bulldozers.

By noon, you could hear the building start to crumble. The trees are going too. The developer says their working closely with the city on their landscaping plan.

"It's really sad," said Chuck Cole a local business owner. "It's been here 70 to 80 years."

And as demolition started, many who used to live there showed up to watch what used to be their home disappear.
